General questions:

What is Usenet, what are news groups?

Apart from the World Wide Web and e-mail, usenet is one of the most important internet services. It is a collection of discussion boards (news groups) about all subjects imaginable, working with its own protocol and a distributed server architecture. In these news groups, whose names are structured hierarchically and usually give a brief description of the content, people post articles and files on Usenet servers with the corresponding software. These articles or files are then transferred via other interconnected Usenet servers to many other networks for worldwide distribution.

Is access to usenet really anonymous?

We guarantee that, when downloading, neither your IP address, nor times of downloads from the news servers are recorded or logged in any way. Your data transfers are only used to measure the transferred volume for account statements and invoicing. In the members area, you can check your remaining data volume for the current period at all times. Please note that uploading articles into the usenet is not fully anonymous.

Why is usenet not well-known?

Until now, Usenet was solely for internet professionals and insiders: the software for downloading data from the huge Usenet archives was complicated to handle and lacked the most important thing: a global search engine. We are the first Usenet provider to offer this feature, and in our member area, we’ll provide you with exclusive tips on how to get the files that really interest you!

What is UseNeXT’s position on freedom of expression?

It is UseNeXT’s opinion that as a legal adult, you are completely capable of making your own responsible decisions. According to Article 5 of the German constitution, every person living in Germany is granted the freedom to form and express his or her own opinion. Within Usenet, just as in any other part of the internet, you can decide for yourself, which content you would like to access and what kinds of information you would like to view.
We do not provide any content on Usenet, but we do provide the platform and service, and assume that you are willing and able to treat them with care. We are against any abuse of freedom of expression, in all circumstances. Due to the huge amount of data available within Usenet, we are unable to evaluate or control any of the content available.

What is UseNeXT’s position on censorship?

Countless people and institutions around the world upload content to Usenet. More than 400 gigabytes of data are being delivered to the Usenet servers every day. This enormous volume alone makes it simply impossible to remove, or restrict individual files without executing mass censorship, which would be in violation of freedom of expression as stipulated in Article 5 of the german constitution.
UseNeXT hereby dissociates itself explicitly from all text and file content on the servers. UseNeXT does not have the ability, in any manner, to affect the content available on the Usenet.

My internet provider already offers a Usenet Server (news server).
Why should I also subscribe to UseNeXT?

Internet providers (such as AOL, Earthlink, Comcast etc.) often neglect news groups, and offer only highly filtered and censored access to usenet. The reasons for censorship of news groups posting mostly files (binaries) include the great technological challenge of getting the 400 gigabytes of daily data under control with the appropriate hardware.

Why doesn’t UseNeXT offer its services free of charge?

The operation high-quality news servers incur considerable costs. UseNeXT offers a powerful alternative to slow access providers and censored news groups. Customer satisfaction is our top priority! Whilst such an enterprise cannot be realized without expenses, we are able to offer our services at sensationally low prices: For just €1 you can begin your UseNeXT experience and gain access to more than 20 terabytes of data at maximum download speed!

What are binaries?

Binaries are binary file attachments to messages on usenet. Binaries can be images, programs or videos. Thanks to our quick instructions in the members area, and cutting-edge software that includes a convenient search engine, you can easily download these binary files from usenet.

Apart from signing up, will I incur further costs?

No. UseNeXT does not replace your existing internet connection (such as T-DSL, Arcor etc.) and its costs, but we do not impose traffic or download fees.

Can everybody sign up here?

Yes, but you must be a legal adult as determined by your county of residence. This is due to the fact that Usenet may contain erotic content. Since the protection of the youth is very important to us, this is necessary. As an adult participant in the usenet network, you are responsible for your actions.

I did not receive any access information…

You will receive 3 e-mails with different access details:

1. 1. Access information for the online members area (the user name includes your customer number)
2. Access information for the UseNeXT software (user name begins with avi-…)
and finally, a third e-mail with your payment receipt.

If you don’t receive any e-mail from us within 30 minutes, it is possible

  • that your sign-up was not successful
  • that your e-mail provider’s spam filter is set too high and didn’t let the UseNeXT e-mails pass.
    • -> Please adjust the spam filter so that these e-mails can pass through
  • that your e-mail address contains a typo
    • -> -> E-mail addresses never begin with www., there are only “@aol.com” addresses, not “@aol.de”. Please contact support@usenext.com to receive your access information again and have them change your E-mail address.
  • that your inbox is full and doesn’t accept any more e-mails
    • -> Please delete unnecessary e-mails and contact support@usenext.com to get your access information again.

If you have received only the e-mail with online access information for www.usenext.de (password without avi-xxxx), it is possible

  • that your payment failed (this will be indicated when you log in)
    • -> Please correct your account details. In very few cases (e.g. a new bank branch) it is possible that your bank is not yet equipped to handle electronic debits.
  • that the e-mail was lost. In very rare cases it is possible that the e-mail was lost on its way to you. Please contact support@usenext.com to receive your access information.

The access information doesn’t work/server log-in error

There are various possibilities:

1.) In a few cases, the e-mails may take longer than 30 minutes after sign-up. If you are missing an e-mail, please check your e-mails again after a little while. Please check to make sure your inbox isn’t full and that it is accepting new e-mail.

2.) Which access information do I use? You will receive 2 e-mails with different access information:

Access information for the members area on www.usenext.de (the user name includes your customer number)
2. Access information for the UseNeXT Software (Username behins with avi-....)
and a third e-mail with your receipt.

Please use the correct access information.

General tip for entering passwords:
Please copy the correct information by marking the information in the e-mail while holding the left mouse button, then right-click on the marked text and select “Copy”.
Then right-click into the log-in field at www.usenext.de and select “Paste”. That way you can make sure that you enter the information correctly.

3.) Error message from software “Server log-in error: Please check your username and password”:

We are constantly working on improving the software, which may make it necessary to update our website/Usenet servers for a short while. If this error occurs, please retry in a few minutes.

If you are behind a firewall/proxy/router (e.g. at work, or in your home network) you may not be able to connect. In this case, please contact us.

4.) Error message “You were logged out for security reasons”
